What should you know about alcohol and partying at bars in KL?
First and foremost, before we share with you our favourite bars in KL, there is something we should mention…
Alcohol in Malaysia is significantly more expensive than in other Southeast-Asian countries. This is especially true in the capital city.
The prices of alcohol in bars, restaurants and supermarkets are generally approaching, or sometimes upwards of, what you’d expect to pay in most European countries.
Example prices of alcohol in Kuala Lumpur:
- Small can of beer in a supermarket or convenience store RM8 – RM15
- Glass/a half pint of beer in a restaurant or bar RM12 – RM20
- Pint of beer in a restaurant or bar RM20 – RM40
- Cheaper cocktail at a smaller bar RM25 – RM40
- Cocktails at one of city’s best cocktail bars RM40 – RM70
We don’t mean to put you off, because you can still go out and have an amazing night in Kuala Lumpur. But, we just want you to be aware that if you plan to spend your time partying in the best places, you have to be prepared to spend some cash.
With that being said, there are some ‘cheap bars in KL’…with the term ‘cheap being relative. They’re cheap for the city, but not always cheap in comparison to the surrounding countries.
9 of the best cocktail bars and hidden bars in KL
If you’re anything like us, you’ll be surprised to find out how popular speakeasy-style bars are in the city. And, equally surprised by how many cool cocktail bars there are too. In a lot of cases, the best speakeasy bars are also some of the best cocktail bars in KL and vice versa.
With that being said, let’s jump into 9 of our favourites!
1. Blue @ EQ
Blue, the EQ hotel rooftop bar and lounge is a new swanky addition to the KL nightlife scene. It deserves its place on any list about the best cocktail bars, hidden bars or rooftop bars that KL has to offer. That’s because it combines all three of these qualities into one amazing, high-rise hangout!
Once you’ve found your way to this bar, which lives on Sky51 at EQ, you can enjoy one of their well-crafted cocktails from their expert mixologists. Having ordered your drinks, head out to their open-air seating area to enjoy the epic view of KL’s skyline.
This view is easily among the best in the city and the perfect place to watch on as day turns to night.
Price: RM48 – RM68 for the cocktails
Recommended drinks: Blue Moon | Pretty
Location: Level 51, EQ, Equatorial Plaza, Jalan Sultan Ismail

2. Suzie Wong
This exciting bar gave us one of our most entertaining nights out in KL. ‘Suzie Wong’ is both one of the best cocktail bars and hidden bars in KL.
If the tucked away noodle cart entrance isn’t cool enough, the “East meets West” style interior and energetic cabarets & musicals certainly will be. Once you’ve enjoyed a few of the perfectly mixed cocktails and sung along with their live band, who belt out well-known favourites, you’ll see what the hype is about.
Suzie Wong is somewhere you definitely go for the overall experience and what an experience it is! The popularity of this bar will be clear when you see the international clientele who come along to the party.
Price: RM58 for the cocktails
Happy hours: Buy one get one free on the cocktails at 4pm – 9pm from Monday to Friday and 6pm – 9pm on a Saturday

3. The Swimming Club
View this post on Instagram
The Swimming Club is tucked away on top of the ‘KL Journal Hotel’, in the heart of Bukit Bintang, and has a swimming pool that overlooks the energetic entertainment district. Luckily, you only have to be a guest of the bar and not the hotel in order to enjoy the rooftop pool.
On the menu, you’ll find some of the best cocktails in Bukit Bintang, a selection of beers and spirits to enjoy. This is the perfect afternoon hangout spot to escape the KL heat, enjoy the pool and 241 cocktail happy-hours!
Price: RM28 – RM38 for the class/signature cocktails
Happy hours: Buy one get one free on the cocktails at 5pm – 7pm daily.
Recommended drinks: Jungle Bird | Pandan Caipirinha
Location: 30, Jalan Beremi, Off, Jalan Sultan Ismail, Bukit Bintang
Opening Hours: 11am – 10pm (Monday – Thursday); 11am – 12pm (Friday – Sundays and Eve of public holiday)
PS150 has to be one the hardest to find and most discreet hidden bars in KL. The unique cocktail bar is hidden away behind a storefront that, to most onlookers, simply looks like an old toy shop. Situated on a quiet road in Chinatown, it’s unlikely you’d just stumble across this bar.
Head down the dark passageways into the back room of the ‘toy store’ to enter the dimly lit bar area. The crowds that visit, and the music playlists, are certainly on the ‘younger’ side. But, the cocktails are as good and as strong as any in the city.

Price: RM40 – RM58 for the cocktails
Recommended drinks: Kiong Si | Poisoned Princess
Location: Ground Floor, 150, Jalan Petaling, 50000 Kuala Lumpur
Opening Hours: Tuesday – Sunday: 5pm – 10pm, Monday: Closed
5. The Attic Bar
Attic Bar really does take the word ‘hidden’ to the extreme, and if we didn’t tell you about it, you could walk past 100 times without ever knowing it existed. This bar is quietly hidden away above one of the city’s many youth hostels, in the attic of a Chinatown building.
Venturing through the many hallways and up a steep spiral staircase might leave you questioning if you’re in the right place…don’t worry, you are.
The bar itself is a very chilled hangout that is popular with younger local crowds and some of the hostel guests. Cheaper cocktails, fairly cheap beer and an open-air terrace are some of the draws to this bar. Overall, it’s a pretty casual and fun place to head out for a drink.

Price: RM30 – RM38 for the cocktails
Recommended drinks: Dragon Lady | Chen Doll
Location: 3rd Floor, 15 Jalan Balai Polis Kuala Lumpur
Opening Hours: 6pm to 1am (Sunday to Thursday), 6pm to 2am (Friday and Saturday)
6. Omakase & Appreciate
Hard to find, amazing cocktails and a unique concept are some ways you could describe Omakase & Appreciate. Trust us, it took us multiple attempts to locate the bar which barely has enough room for 10 people inside. But, that’s part of its charm. You could easily stand outside the door to this speakeasy without knowing a bar sits on the other side, it’s just THAT discreet!
Omakase is a Japanese concept that means “ill leave it up to you” and that’s what they do. To put it simply, you tell the bartender the flavours and spirits you like in your cocktails and they’ll mix something up for you.
For us, the bartender got it perfect with his mixes. However, if you’d like to know what you’re ordering there is a small cocktail menu, with around 4 options, available.
Price: RM40 – RM60 for the cocktails
Recommended drinks: Ask for a surprise.
Location: Bangunan Ming Annexe, 9, Jalan Ampang
Opening Hours: 5 pm until 1 am (Tuesday to Friday), 9 pm to 1 am (Saturdays)
7. The Heli Lounge (aka Helipad KL)
View this post on Instagram
Have you ever fancied partying the night away on an active helipad? Probably not. But, if you have then you’ll definitely enjoy this rooftop bar in KL.
We aren’t exaggerating, by the way, the helipad is active during the day and turns into a bar by night. One of the main features is the 360-degree view you get of the surrounding cityscape, which is why Heli lounge is the perfect place to watch the sunset.
Head up for sunset, grab a cocktail, watch as the city lights up under the night sky and continue to party late into the evening. Bars don’t come more unique than this!
We believe the prices have gone up recently and can’t find a source for updated prices.
Location: 4 Menara KH, Jalan Sultan Ismail, Bukit Bintang
Opening Hours: 7pm until Midnight (Monday to Wednesday), until 2am (Thursday), until 3am (Friday and Saturday)
8. Marini’s on 57
View this post on Instagram
If you’re looking for a more sophisticated night out, at a rooftop lounge, then Marini’s on 57 is a perfect choice. The bar has an ‘ultra-chic’ setting and it’s said to be the highest rooftop bar in KL. Guests are able to enjoy an unobstructed view of the Petronas Twin Towers through the floor to ceiling glass windows that surround the bar.
Along with the bar area, where perfectly crafted cocktails are the focus, they also have a whiskey & cigar lounge as well as a restaurant, with an Italian inspired dining experience.
The ‘sunset hours menu’ gives discounts that make their beer and cocktails some of the best priced in the city. Especially when you consider the environment.
Price: RM38 – RM57 for the signature cocktails
Happy hours: RM15 Tiger beer and RM35 on selected cocktails between 5pm and 9pm daily
Recommended drinks: Pandan Loves Truffle
Location: 57 Menara 3 Petronas Persiaran, Kuala Lumpur City Centre
Opening Hours: 5 pm to 1:30am (Monday to Thursday), 5pm to 3am (Friday to Saturday)

Jann is a new bar, at the Four Points by Sheraton Hotel, and is already up there with the best cocktail bars in KL. Lawson and the rest of the team at Jann have created a cocktail menu different to any that we’ve seen before.
These drinks really are original, which is a refreshing change from other cocktail bars that just serve up the well-known classics. If you’re not sipping a cocktail topped with smoked chicken jerky, you might be eating/drinking an alcoholic version of the popular local dessert ‘Tau Foo Fah’.
The cocktails were inspired by the surrounding Chinatown and concocted with the history of the area kept closely in mind. Each cocktail has it’s own interesting story behind it that the bar staff will be glad to share with you.
Price: Around RM50 for most of the cocktails
Happy hours: Special drink prices at 5:00 pm and 8:00 pm daily
Recommended drinks: POS 1911 | Tau Foo Fah
Location: Four Points by Sheraton, 2, Jalan Balai Polis, City Centre
Opening Hours: 4pm to Midnight (Sunday to Thursday), 4pm to 1am (Friday to Saturday)
5 of our favourite cheap bars in KL
Bars don’t always have to offer a unique setting, cool concept or fancy cocktails to be worth visiting. Sometimes, the fact they serve cold beer and provide a place to chill out or catch up with friends is enough to justify a visit.
The following list is just 5 of our favourite cheap bars in KL that we found great for serving both cheap beers and cocktails.
10. Gravy Baby
Gravy Baby is both a bar and a restaurant. Their food menu has a wide range of delicious Western dishes that range from fried chicken waffles to pizza. Alternatively, you can just go there for the cheap drinks too.
The ‘from opening until midnight’ happy hour(s) means that you can pick up a pint of Tiger beer for RM21 all day long. Otherwise, pick up 3 of their strong and well-made cocktails for just RM89. At this price, essentially RM30 each, the cocktails can’t be beaten!
We absolutely love that you can mix and match your choices of cocktail with this deal too.
Price: RM21 for a pint of Tiger beer, 3 cocktails for RM89
Happy hours: ‘From opening until midnight’ daily
Recommended drinks: Caribbean Punch | Tropical Fix
Location: Pavilion Mall, Jalan Bukit Bintang (there are multiple branches in the city)
Opening Hours: 7:00 AM – 1:00 am (Sunday – Thursday), 7:00 AM – 2:00 am (Friday – Saturday)
11. Beer Bank
You could say that Beer Bank is one of the cheapest and most hidden bars in KL. After all, it is tucked away in the back of a ‘Selections’ grocery store.
Once you’ve entered you’ll be treated with wall fridges that contain lagers and craft beers from all around the world. Some of the international imports are on the expensive side. Local (to the region) brands such as Tiger, Singha and Chang beer, however, are all really cheap, sometimes as cheap as RM10 for a bottle.
Besides cheap beer, the Beer Bank plays some well known catchy music, has live sports, free board games to enjoy and really friendly staff!
Price: RM10 – RM15 for local (Southeast Asian) beers
Location: Wisma Lim Foo Yoong, 86, Jalan Raja Chulan
Opening Hours: 12pm until late daily. Their website and Google say closing is at 8pm, but they were open until at least 1am when we visited.
This is one bar/cafe that we simply stumbled upon one day. We absolutely had to check if their happy hour promo of RM11.90 for a pint of Tiger beer was real. It was, and it has to be the cheapest pint of beer in KL.
All in all, Katmandu was quiet inside, it’s not so much a bar, but a small ‘Vietnamese cafe’. Though if you’re simply looking for some cold beer and aren’t fussed about the ‘atmosphere’ then this is the perfect place.
Price: RM11.90 for a pint of Tiger Beer
Location:Lot 19, Tengkat Tong Shin, Bukit Bintang
Opening Hours: 1pm – 3am Daily
Oldies is a cool little ‘cafe bar’ that serves food & drink in an old, restored colonial building in the middle of Chinatown. The various antiques that decorate the inside give this bar a bit of character. For us, it was the perfect place to take a rest, escape the heat and enjoy a nice, cold and cheap beer.
The all-day happy hour means you can pick up a cold glass of Tiger beer for RM13 or even a Guinness for just RM15. Alternatively, if you want to go all out, you can get 10 Tiger beers for just RM99…
Price: RM13 for a Tiger beer
Location:78, Jalan Sultan, City Centre
Opening Hours: 11am – 11pm Daily
Zion is actually an all-night party venue located in the ‘happening’ nightlife area of Changkat Bukit Bintang. In the daytime though, they offer at least one of, the cheapest pints of beer in the area at just RM20 for a pint of Tiger.
It’s the perfect place to stop off in the late afternoon, sit outside and people watch with an ice-cold beer. In terms of people watching, believe us when we say there are some interesting people that pass through Changkat!
Price: RM20 for a pint of Tiger beer at happy hour
Happy hours: 5pm until 10pm daily
Location: 31, Changkat Bukit Bintang, Bukit Bintang
Opening Hours: 5pm – 3am (Sunday – Tuesday), 5pm – 5am (Wednesday – Saturday)
