Why Use Hashtags?

The simple answer is to grow your audience. This is because using hashtags on your posts allows for more people to view your content. Ultimately, this should result in more followers, likes, comments and views! They even help attract the right people to your business. In fact, if we didn’t use hashtags on our own Instagram posts we wouldn’t be near as successful as we are.

Creating Your Own Cocktail Hashtags List

Most importantly, the first thing you need to know whilst creating your own hashtag technique is that Instagram only allows you to use 30 hashtags. If you use more than 30 hashtags then your content will not be seen by any new users.

Secondly, you need to take into account relevant hashtags. There is no point in posting a photo of a cocktail and then using the hashtag #travelcouple. Why? Because cocktails have nothing to do with travel. The aim here is to attract an audience that enjoys your photos and wants to interact with your content.

We find its best to mix up the hashtags we use. Instagram will find it spammy if you use the same hashtags all of the time. Also, you shouldn’t be using all of the most popular cocktail hashtags. Especially if your account is not ‘big’.

For example, if you were to use only the top cocktail hashtags: #cocktails (25.5million) #cocktail (13.2million) #cocktailbar (2million) then your photo would see very little benefit. This is because the competition is extremely high. However, if you were to use #cocktailforyou (16.1K) which is a less popular hashtag, you’d have a better chance of making it into Instagram’s good books!

Our recommended Cocktail Hashtags formula:
  • 5 very popular hashtags (1-10million)
  • 10-15 popular hashtags (100k-1million)
  • 5 less popular hashtags (10k-100k)
  • 5 location hashtags – Are you promoting a bar in London? If so, use London based hashtags! Do you want a Mexican audience? If so, use Mexican hashtags!
  • 1 own hashtag – Why not create your own hashtag as the big brands do? This hashtag could be your account name or something unique. But, make sure to use it with all of your photos and you never know, one day you may become big enough that other accounts use it too!

To find out what the current hashtag popularity is, you can head over to Instagram. Then, search for the hashtag you’re wanting to use. Instagram will quickly show you the volume of the specific cocktail hashtag. Thus, helping you to decide if you want to use it or not.

So, there is no perfect hashtag strategy. Otherwise, everyone would be Insta famous! But, if you keep the above points in mind, you’ll soon begin to see a big improvement.
